An ankle replacement is a common type of surgery where a damaged ankle joint is swapped with an artificial replacement.  Ankle replacement is major surgery that can take up to a year to fully recover from. But how long does an ankle replacement take and how much does an ankle replacement cost? Here’s what you need to know.

How long does an ankle replacement take and how is it done?

About 1000 ankle replacement surgeries take place a year in the UK. Not many surgeons carry out ankle replacement and when they do the average number per year is just 4. Some surgeons carry out more than 20 a year and research suggests that centres with higher numbers get better results. The surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic or an epidural and the surgery typically takes between 90 minutes to carry out. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision about 15cm long at the front of the ankle, removes the damaged joint and replaces it with an artificial joint made of metal alloy with a plastic surface that allows gliding motion.  A modern artificial ankle joint lasts less than a hip replacement but should last the patient for at least 10 years.

How much does ankle replacement surgery cost?

An ankle replacement may be offered for free on the NHS but requires an NHS GP referral. Waiting times depend on local need and provisions.

The cost of a private ankle replacement in the UK varies from £18,000 to £30,000 depending on the complexity of surgery and the prosthesis used. It is important to ensure you are aware of all costs before agreeing to undergo the surgery. The costs involved include hospital costs, the cost of the prosthesis, the surgeons and anaesthetists’ fees, and the costs of any investigations or rehabilitation. It is important to bear in mind some of the other costs which includes the costs of drugs such as blood thinners and pain killers; a cast protector to keep the cast dry; changes of plaster cast or a walking boot or ankle brace; X-rays you may need; and physiotherapy costs. The costs can all add up and it is important you obtain a quote for each of these costs before proceeding.

What is the recovery time for an ankle replacement?

After the operation you will be in hospital usually for 1-2 nights. You will need a walking aid such as a knee scooter or crutches for the first two to four weeks and a specialist exercise programme which is beneficial to help recovery.

Generally, patients are able to go back to normal activities within two to three months and to certain sports within 6 months. The full benefits of the new joint may not be felt for up to a year.

Who if offered ankle replacement surgery?

Ankle replacement is major surgery and will only be recommended on the NHS if other treatments, such as an ankle brace, physiotherapy or steroid injections, haven’t helped and you remain in pain.

You may be offered ankle replacement surgery if:

  • you have severe pain, swelling and stiffness in your ankle joint and your mobility is reduced
  • your quality of life and sleep is affected by your ankle pain
  • carrying out everyday tasks has become difficult or impossible
  • you’re feeling depressed as a result of your ankle pain or reduced mobility
  • If your general health is otherwise good enough to undergo a general anaesthetic and the stress of surgery
  • That your home circumstances allow you to cope with the rehabilitation
